FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

(1) Can I start my program at any time?

Almost. DALLAS TeleCollege offers three course schedules:

Five 8-week semesters per academic year of sections exclusively for sailors.
Approximately 200 sections delivered on a 16-week semester each full academic semester.
Our most popular courses are offered on a 16-week schedule beginning about every two weeks year-round.

(2) Will I be assigned an advisor, and will I be able to communicate with that person on a regular basis?

Academic advising is available online. Messages can be sent via electronic mail after which a team of academic advisors will be available to respond to inquiries. An advisor may also be contacted by phone at: 1-888-468-4268.

(3) How much of the degree has to be taken through a partnership school to meet residency requirements.

Twenty-five percent of courses must be completed through DALLAS TeleCollege (or NCPACE through Richland College).

(4) Will courses from other colleges transfer into your partnership school degree plan?

It is possible to receive credit for courses taken from other institutions. Official transcripts from colleges previously attended are required and must be evaluated for course transferability. We are a member of SOCNAV.

(5) How will classes be delivered?

Classes will be delivered online using computers and computer peripherals. An additional format of course delivery will be telecourse plus format which includes a series of video programs as well as computer and online components. Some courses may be available on CD-ROM.

(6) Is there a placement test?

In compliance with Texas state law, some courses require a math or writing score as a prerequisite. In such cases, an assessment test will need to be proctored.

(7) Do you have study guides for the courses offered?

Courses will include course material such as study literature. Your instructor will provide additional study materials and guides as needed.

(8) Do I have to own a computer to do distance learning?

Yes, A multimedia computer with reliable Internet access and an email account are needed for online courses. Some courses may also require a VHS format video player.

(9) Does your school accept credits from foreign institutions?

Yes, it is possible to transfer course credit from a foreign institution. Official transcripts plus a certified English translation are required and must be evaluated for course transferability.

(10) Can I take CLEP and other tests for credit towards a degree?

Yes, approved subject examinations are accepted for credit toward a degree.

(11) Can I continue my degree while at sea?

Yes. At this time, the DCCCD is a proud member of the Navy College Program for Afloat College Education (NCPACE).

(12) How many courses can I take at a time?

The maximum academic load is 18 credit hours of course work per semester or five classes. Students must receive permission to carry a heavier academic load.

(13) Will tuition assistance cover the costs for this type of study?

Yes, tuition assistance is available and may cover up 100% tuition of distance learning courses. Students should contact an appropriate Navy official for more information.

(14) How do I apply for grants/financial aid?

Sailors should contact an appropriate Navy official concerning military funding for distance learning courses or our college veterans affairs office.

(15) Does your school offer scholarships to military and family member?

Not at this time. We are looking into such an offering for sailors and their families.

(16) How do I use my VA benefits?

Questions regarding TA should be directed to your Navy College Office. DALLAS TeleCollege is pleased to accept the GI Bill. If you are interested in applying these benefits please contact our admissions office at 888-468-4268

If you were a resident of Texas at the time of enlistment, the State of Texas may cover additional educational expenses at a state educational institution under the Hazlewood Act above and beyond TA and the GI Bill.

(17) Does the student pay in-state or out of state fees?

Out of state tuition applies. If you are enlisted as a resident of Texas or Dallas County then in-state or in-county tuition may apply.
